Choice

Splitting Hairs - Diluting time, power, effectiveness.Isn’t it wonderful that we live in a time of such great choice? More choices are available to us right now, in our culture, than have ever been available to any culture in any time in history. Yay!

…Boo. Choices! I get bogged down by what to have for lunch! Much less the hundreds and hundreds of choices I face every day to run my business.

First, there is the challenge of choosing what is most important. Do I:

  1. work on making sites (ie. make money),
  2. do accounting stuff (get money),
  3. pursue and generate sales leads (ensure there will be money next month),
  4. study new technologies (increase my earning potential and make sure I’m not becoming obsolete)

Then within each of those are multitudes of choices that shape and steer the direction of my business, and even direction of my life. Within each choice is a multitude of possible outcomes, so how can I possibly know which action to take when I don’t know what the effect will be? Yes big picture thinking is so important but I find it very distracting. It’s something that They always took care of for me when I had a job.

And within this infinite splitting of hairs, I can feel my power, my strength, my energy, my effectiveness diluting. That precious creative force that moves mountains is oozing through the cracks between each possible outcome.

I need to gather this force. Concentrate my energies on one infinitesimal point, like a laser. Sharp. Pointed. Direct. Effective. Obliterate the target and move on to the next. Think laser hair removal and all my clients are little hair follicles.

Start with:

  1. Fill the well (from a place of spirit and nourishment, not from a place of procrastination) A 5-10 minute exercise where I start big: review the purpose and direction I want my business and life to take. Then narrow it down to what I need to do today, and ending in a list of action items and the focus to blast through them.

Am I sure about the choices I’ve made? Of course not, …I just have to accept the not knowing, make peace with the fear and GO. And this is free fall.
